WHO'S BEHIND BROOMBY? |

|
Mark Powell - Broomby Chief Executive After 20 years as a teacher, a social worker, a civil servant, and a community service organiser, Mark came to Sheffield in 1989 to set up the UK's first post consumer plastics reclamation enterprise. From the outset he employed a workforce of adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues, and between 1989 and 2002 Reclaim grew into one of the leading Social Firms in the country, with a turnover of more than £1m. In the late 1990s, Mark set up two more companies -Yes2Ventures and IMBY - to create employment for people who are severely disadvantaged in the labour market for health related and social reasons. In 2006,when IMBY's Trustees moved away from Social Firm development, he formed Broomby CIC as a development agency and hands-on consultancy for developing Social Firms. Mark has a degree in Drama (B.A. Hons) and is a Director of Dead Earnest Theatre. Along the way, he has acquired an M.A. in Learning Disability Services, and a Cropwood Fellowship from the Institute of Criminology at Cambridge University. He was a founder Director of Social Enterprise Yorkshire & Humber (SEYH) and until recently a Director of The Social Enterprise Coalition. He is on the Board of Social Firms UK and is a co-author of The Extra Elements A Social Firm Trainer. |
