To visitors to The Becklin Centre (Leeds Partnerships Foundation Trust adult acute inpatient site) Buster's Café is just a good place to eat, drink and chat, but to patients and staff it is proving to be far more than that. The café offers a range of hot and cold refreshments throughout the week and provides a welcoming environment where patients and visitors can meet and where staff can have a working lunch or a bite to eat between meetings. Since it opened on June 20th 2007 the café has steadily increased its turnover and now employs four staff, three of whom have mental health issues or a larning disability. As they gain qualifications and grow in confidence under the management of chef and trainer, Jayne Kennedy, this staff team provides a positive expression of hope and recovery both to people using mental health services and to staff. Another Buster's café development is planned to open at The Mount - another NHS site in Leeds - in July 2010, under the management of Ray Umney. |
